Mike Brown: Sucker!!!

Posted by pacmanxu on May 27, 2011

Being the new coach of the most storied NBA franchise has got to be pretty sweet, right?  What an accomplishment!!!  All his dreams have come true.

WRONG!!

Not that I wouldn’t take the Lakers money, but this is the worst move that Brown could have made, because:

  1. Following Phil Jackson is career suicide.  The Great Hippie cannot be replaced.  There is no way Brown can fill those shoes and suspenders.  He won’t measure up, he won’t be as successful, and the fans will hate him for it.  He’s just going to be the poor sucker that followed Jackson and was fired before their next real coach.
  2. Just as important as #1, the team he’s getting is on the downside of their useful life.  Kobe is old, Artest is old, Gasol past his prime, Odom maybe on the way out, Fisher old, Bynum childish and always injured.  Who did I miss?  What a great situation to be successful, huh?  He’s in the worst possible spot.

    This says it all

The Lakers will be irrelevant and he’ll get fired for it before even having the chance to try and rebuild.

  3. The Lakers exist to win championships, not to be competitive, which is considered a success for other teams.  With that roster and teams like the Heat and Bulls significantly better, there will be no championships in LA for a while.
  4. Does Brown seem like an LA guy to you?  Nope.  He would have been much better suited to coach a worthless team like the Pacers, where he could be fat and happy with no expectations.
  5. He doesn’t even have a chance at being remembered for anything good with the Lakers.  Pat Riley and Jackson are the legends at the top with Jerry West as GM, and at the bottom will be Kurt Rambis and Brown.

From the Lakers side, they’ve hired the perfect guy.  They know all the things I’ve mentioned are true, so they needed a guy that would be quiet and go about losing for 2 years to be the perfect scapegoat and be fired without making any noise.

I wish I could talk to Jack Nicholson about this…

Cavs Win Lottery With Clippers Pick.

Posted by pacmanxu on May 22, 2011

By now, everyone know that the Cavs won the NBA Draft Lottery.  But no one seems to realize that the ping pong ball that got them the #1 pick was actually the Clippers pick that the Cavs got in the Baron Davis/Mo Williams trade.  HA!

The Cavs actual pick was at #4, which would have royally sucked if not for the grace and incompetence of the Clippers to trade an unprotected lottery pick just to get rid of Davis’ contract.

So the good news is the Cavs have the #1 and #4 picks in the draft.  The Bad news is that there is no Jared Sullinger or Harrison Barnes to pick.  This was labeled a weak year for the draft and it got even weaker when guys like Sullinger and Barnes decided to stay in school, presumably because of a likely NBA lockout this year.  Dammit!

Instead of potentially looking at Barnes and Kyrie Irving, the Cavs are now weighing other options like Enes Kanter and two Lithuanian guys whose names I won’t even try to spell.

There is no doubt that they’ll pick Irving with the first pick.  He’s the consensus best player in this draft, despite only playing 12 games last year.  He’s quick, he can shoot, pass, and run the pick and roll like a pro.  If there is a silver lining to this weak draft class, it’s that Irving probably would be the #1 pick regardless of who was in this class.  He’s the best PG in the draft since Chris Paul.

Either way, this draft along withe the $14M trade exception the Cavs have mean that this team will look very different next season and it could potentially have a pair of 19 year old studs to build the team around.  A good start for a franchise that needs it after LeBum disgraced the city and himself with his surrender to the Celtics last year and his humiliating decision show on ESPN.

I like the future outlook for the Cavs, if only the NBA didn’t suck as league.

Anderson Varejao Untouchable? Are You Kidding Me?

Posted by pacmanxu on February 10, 2011

The Cavs suck.  That is no mystery.  What is a mystery to me, though, is how I’ve heard Anderson Varejao referred to by the Cavs and other media outlets.  They called him untouchable, as far as a trade commodity.  WHAT???

Can someone please explain to me how a guy that averages 9 pts and 9 rebs a game is untouchable?  He’s a very good defender and an excellent offensive rebounder, but give me a break.  If this is how the team views a marginal player, then how do they view the other guys on the team or even around the league?

They need to get out of the past.  Andy was a great piece to a team that had loads of talent around him.  He was the garbage man that did all the dirty stuff while others took care of the scoring.  But you don’t build a team around a guy like him.  Would you build a team around Dennis Rodman?

When other teams come calling, you LISTEN and use him as leverage to try and move Antawn Jamison’s or Mo Williams’ contracts. Even if you can’t succeed there, you use him to try and get a 1st round draft pick to help rebuild the team.  Andy is not part of the long-term rebuild of this organization.  He just isn’t and he’s not good enough to give that designation to.

The Cavs need to do whatever they can to blow this team up, Marlins style, sell off every valuable piece they can for young players and draft picks that WILL mean something to the new Cavs.

Varejao being untouchable actually now makes me sick after thinking about it.  Of all the players in the NBA, where would you rank him on your wish list?  200?  Before his injury, only 80% of fantasy leagues had him owned and only 44% had him starting.  If some other team is desperate enough to offer something valuable for a guy who can’t score, then you take it and run.

Chris Grant, are you listening?

Lebron VS Cleveland Fans (and South Park too!)

Posted by pacmanxu on November 6, 2010

By now, we’ve all seen Lebron’s new commercial.  He is not a smart man but Nike is brilliant.  There was no doubt in my mind that some Cleveland faithful would come back strong and smack him down.  How can he be dumb and Nike be brilliant?  Simple.  Lebron will never win his personal battle against the city of Cleveland, especially after “the decision.” To keep bringing it up is moronic because sympathy runs with the fans of Cleveland.  He is the villain…period.

Nike, however, doesn’t and shouldn’t give a crap about what anyone thinks of Lebron as long as people are paying attention to him.  They don’t have to avoid the subject, and in fact they should continue to trot him and keep this alive, because it turns a regular commercial into national news.

The Cleveland spoof of his commercial is pretty solid and direct.  However, South Park has also spoofed it a little more indirectly, which is pretty funny too.  I love those guys.

Anyway, here are all three…the commercial, the Cleveland spoof, and the South Park spoof in order.  Enjoy!

Are A-Rod And Lebron Related?

Posted by pacmanxu on August 7, 2010

Maybe not, but they do have a LOT in common.  Different races, different ages, different sports, different girlfriends, but that’s about it.

Can you hear that loud sucking sound?

Their similarities are much more abundant and eerily redundant in a few instances.

  • The Draft – Alex was the first overall pick in 1993, Lebron the first overall pick in 2003…both at the age of 18.
  • Early PT – Alex played his first MLB game in 1994, almost unreal for a baseball player.  Lebron was the best player on his team his rookie year, so obviously he played early.
  • Ridiculous TV blunders – Alex had that stupid interview with 60 minutes in his sweater vest for his steroids issue.  Lebron has his stupid interview with Jim Gray before he publicly humiliated himself and the city of Cleveland in announcing he was “taking his talents to South Beach.”
  • Alex became a star and beloved by the team that drafted him, as did Lebron.  Both left those teams and fans on bad terms.  Alex left to go to Texas for a $252 million contract, Lebron left for less money to be DwYane Wade’s “Scottie Pippen” in Miami.
  • Both are the best talents in their sport, yet neither has been able to prove they can actually lead a team to anything.  Both left teams where they were THE MAN to go to loaded teams in an attempt to win championship easily and without pressure.
  • Alex struggled mightily in the playoffs.  Lebron gave up.
  • Alex broke age/stat milestones throughout his career, as has Lebron.  Alex will probably break the HR record and James may break the scoring record, but neither will be considered great.
  • Alex took steroids…many believe Lebron has too.  He may just be an athletic freak, but it’s possible.
  • Both have been involved in sexual scandals.  Alex with Madonna and Lebron’s mom with Delonte West.
  • Both outwardly love themselves.  Alex had that magazine piece (GQ or Vanity Fair) where he was caressing his oiled chest.  Lebron had his side-of-building “Witness” billboard along with constantly complimenting himself.
  • Both want to sound really smart in interviews and you can see them trying not to offend anyone.
  • Both wear Yankee caps.
  • Clevelanders hate both.

How many was that?  I’m not going to count, but it’s a lot and I’m sure there are a few that I have left out, both positive and negative.  I focused on the negative because I think they’re both punks and I don’t want people to soften on their attitudes toward either just because of the passage of time.  Yes, I’m bitter…but not wrong.
